We believe that caring for the needs of others is an important quality that every young person should have. And of course, the community extends beyond human life to local ecology and wider environmental issues. We believe that the experience should be as hands-on as possible. Holistic development such as this creates real-life connections to academic subjects, while encouraging a more balanced life.
Community engagement appropriate for each age and stage:
- Primary Years – Children take part in service projects through the House Team, the Green Team and the Parents’ Association.
- Year 8 / 7º Ano – Hands-on environmental projects.
- Year 9 / 8º Ano – Visits to a special education needs centre supporting children and young adults.
- Year 10 / 9º Ano and beyond – Participation in Outdoor Education and the Portuguese Duke of Edinburgh Award (Prémio), allowing students to research and volunteer in areas of personal interest.

Community Engagement Programme
At St. Julian’s, we envision a school where every student develops a lifelong commitment to empathy, service, and global citizenship. By embedding community engagement work into each year group’s educational journey, we aim to nurture compassionate leaders who understand and contribute to their communities and the wider world.
Our bespoke programme in each year group prepares students for the requirements of Creativity, Activity and Service (IB Diploma Programme) or Community Engagement (IB Career-related programme). Overall, this vision positions St. Julian’s as a school that aims to shape a brighter future, where every student leaves not only with knowledge but also with the tools and drive to make the world a better place.

Family volunteering
Families often volunteer together, strengthening the bonds between them while enhancing the impact of their community service. Students report back on their experiences at School, discussing what they have learned, reinforcing their personal growth. Volunteering also builds meaningful connections between students, teachers, the Parents Association and charities.
New opportunities to serve are highlighted by email and through The Lighthouse newsletter.
