Welcome from the Head

Welcome to St. Julian’s School, Portugal’s leading British international school since 1932.

As you explore our website, you will discover that our school takes great pride in its rich history and heritage, even after more than 90 years. We are focused on the future and committed to preparing well-rounded individuals who are not only successful and happy but also capable of making a positive impact in the world. According to our Shaper Profile, we strive to educate children who are compassionate, curious, collaborative communicators, and who, above all, possess the courage to be active global citizens and make a difference in the world.

Our exceptionally talented staff, wonderful families, and outstanding facilities are situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Europe. We currently serve a Portuguese and international community representing over 60 nationalities.

Our students, aged 3 to 18, benefit from a range of academically rich programmes. In the British Section, we offer the National Curriculum for England, leading to IGCSEs. For Years 12 & 13, we offer the IB Diploma and the IB Career-related Programme. Additionally, our Bilingual Section extends from Primary to Secondary, offering a curriculum that allows families to access the Portuguese National Curriculum while participating in joint classes, sports and arts with the British Section, leading to IGCSEs and the IB.

Our examination results for students aged 16-18 are among the best in international schools worldwide. These achievements highlight not only the hard work and dedication of our students but also the high standards of teaching and support provided by our staff.

We endeavour to value differences, respect others’ opinions and beliefs, and create a campus environment where our children always feel safe. This atmosphere enables our students to develop into global citizens.

In 2024/25, for the third consecutive year, St. Julian’s was recognised as one of the top 10 private schools in Europe by Spear’s and as one of the top 15 international schools in Europe by Carfax.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about life at St. Julian’s School. One of my colleagues will be happy to assist you.

In an increasingly competitive international school landscape, we stand out as a not-for-profit institution. This means that every penny of your fees is reinvested directly into your child’s schooling, ensuring the highest calibre of teaching and a commitment to their educational growth.

Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy exploring our website, and I look forward to the opportunity to meet you soon at our beautiful school in Carcavelos.

Our Curriculum

Deep roots, bright future

Our students thrive in the wonderful international ethos of St. Julian’s. It is a warm, welcoming community that feels like a family. Embedded in our school badge is our historic lighthouse symbol, which expresses the guidance and enlightenment we have been providing for generations.

Our strategy directs all plans and decisions at the School. It is founded on three pillars: Teaching & Learning, Wellbeing and Organisation for Learning. These create a solid foundation for ensuring academic excellence and enable every child to flourish.
