At this stage of studies, our curriculum is designed to support and challenge students to reach their full potential in all areas, achieving excellence. Our students become independent learners and develop critical thinking, equipping them with essential skills for the future. Relationships between students and teachers are lively and engaging, enhanced by a wide variety of experiences beyond the classroom. Our international environment promotes tolerance and solidarity, preparing students to become global citizenship. In all these ways we nurture self-confidence and fulfilment, encouraging students to speak up for themselves and for others.

Well-rounded education

At St. Julian’s we balance academic and co-curricular activities to nurture students’ collaborative and independent learning, resilience and creative problem-solving skills. And with our international perspective we provide a global education, helping students make connections to the wider world. Above all, we encourage students to take appropriate risks in their formal and informal learning, fostering their sense of independence and responsibility.

Key Stage 3 (KS3)

The diverse Key Stage 3 curriculum broadens and deepens students’ understanding, incorporating traditional subjects alongside innovative ones like Opening Minds (Year 7) and Enrichment (Years 8 & 9). All Key Stage 3 students are provided with an iPad to support and transform their learning experience and to ensure IT proficiency.

All students study the core subjects (Maths, English, Portuguese, Science) and humanities (History & Geography), one additional modern language (French or German), and six practical/creative subjects (Art, Computer Science, Creative Arts, Design & Technology, Music and PE). Health & Citizenship (H&C) encourages reflection on students’ personal, social, emotional and intellectual growth. What’s more, our innovative Opening Minds Programme for Year 7 students enhances interdisciplinary learning.

Key Stage 4 (KS4)

KS4 is a tailored two-year programme culminating in the British General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) external exams. These are awarded by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel (Pearson). GCSEs mark the end of compulsory education and prepare students for further study in Key Stage 5, which most students pursue.

Our bespoke KS4 curriculum includes English Language and Literature, Science (Triple or Double Award), Mathematics and a language (Portuguese, German or French). To ensure every student’s rounded development, we also provide several non-examined courses: PE, Critical Thinking, Outdoor Education, Health & Citizenship and a Research Project.

Year 9 students shape their own curriculum for Key Stage 4 and pursue their passions by choosing from a broad range of options. These include Art, Business Studies, Computer Science, Design Technology, Drama, Geography, History, ICT, PE and Music.

Students are encouraged to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them, fostering a growth mindset and preparing them for future challenges.

Key Stage 5 (KS5)

Key Stage 5 at St. Julian’s School offers students a challenging and supportive environment in which to prepare for university and future careers. Through the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and now also the Career- related Programme, students develop academic excellence, critical thinking, and a global outlook. Alongside rigorous studies, they benefit from a wide range of enrichment opportunities, leadership roles, and personalized guidance, ensuring they are well equipped for life beyond school.
