Physical EducationPhysical Education Department The teaching of physical Education is based on the belief that this area makes a significant contribution to the growth and development of each individual. The principal aim is to create an environment in which sport is seen as an enjoyable and essential part of education so that participation becomes the norm throughout life. At St. Julian’s, sport has never been relegated to just one small part of one subject in the curriculum. The PE department is acknowledged as providing a vital part of the whole school experience. Boys and girls participate in a minimum of 2 hours 15 mins (1 period of 1 hr 30 mins, and 1 period of 45 mins) curriculum time in which we endeavour to offer all students a breadth of activity and encourage the understanding of, and need for, regular physical exercise. We aim to enable our young people to make informed decisions about adopting a healthy and active lifestyle in future years.Aimsskills and understanding necessary to maintain a healthy, active, enjoyable lifestyle and to promote physical activity as being intrinsically worthwhile in itself, as well as developing knowledge and understanding of fitness and health.To provide a quality physical education programme throughout the school which contributes to the leaning processes in physical, moral, emotional and social areas. CurriculumAll pupils receive specialist teaching in a variety of sports: hockey, basketball, football, gymnastics, volleyball, cross country, fitness, athletics, rounders and softball. The programme is designed so that all students are able to acquire and build upon skills, in both individual and team activities. A great deal of emphasis is placed on cooperation and team work as well as on the competitive element of this area.In the Autumn Term, the areas are football, volleyball and hockey for the girls and for the boys basketball, hockey and volleyball are our major outdoor sports during this time and we run teams at all levels with a great deal of success. We are acknowledged as an accomplished school and have players playing for successful out of school clubs. In the spring term the emphasis for the girls in the first half of term is on basketball , football for the boys in the double periods and in the single periods all pupils follow a fitness and cross- country programme. In the Summer term athletics is the major focus leading up to sports and stadium day, We have some very fine athletes who regularly break school records. After this the students begin a softball and rounders programme. Lessons are structured in such a way as to allow every pupil, whatever there ability, to achieve some success and show a degree of understanding. Sport is seen as a way of channelling the energy and high spirits of young people. Competitiveness is positively encouraged and any pupil showing an interest for a particular sport is given the opportunity to develop her talents through School teams or clubs. Extra Curricular ActivitiesWe are aiming to set high sporting standards at St. Julian’s and this is achieved by devoting time and energy, outside curriculum time, to our School teams. A full fixture programme operates during the week and at weekends. Training takes place after school with fixtures mostly after school during the week.Primary PEThe importance of the junior PE lessons is seen to be in developing the pupils knowledge and understanding of a selection of major sports. In year 3 pupils develop skills is co-ordination, co-operation, in gymnastics, ball skills, multi- tasks skills, team work, warming up and fair play in football, basketball. In years 4 and 5 Year boys and girls have the opportunity of taking part in a unit of work in gymnastics, football, basketball, volleyball, developing pupils technical skills and game knowledge. During the Summer the pupils experience rounders and athletics. |
