Year 8 Field Trip to Azores - 22nd to 25th March
"Aiming to broaden the students’ knowledge of the Portuguese Language and Culture, the Portuguese Department will take a group of 30 students from 22nd – 25th March, to the island of S. Miguel, Azores.
Our objective is to enlarge students´ knowledge of the country they live in by letting them experience linguistic regional variations and oral specific pronunciation of micaelense Portuguese, and also enlarge their knowledge of geographical, social and cultural realities quite different from the ones they are used to on the mainland. For this purpose, we have planned a cross curricular four-day trip to the “capital” of the Archipelago of the Azores during which the students will be asked to complete a Travel Diary of new words only used in the Island due to its specificities (fumarolas, for instance), description of landscapes, cultural costume/traditions, geographical dissimilarities of both sides of S. Miguel, local foods, etc. Since this project comprises Secondary Portuguese and Science two new activities have been included, e.g. a visit to the Bel Cheese processing factory, and also to Thermoelectric Power Plant of S. Miguel – these visits fall under the Science subject syllabus being carried out in the Science Department.
Students will also be encouraged to take photos so posters can be produced and exhibited when they return to school. To create these posters students may choose to work individually or in groups."
