Modern Foreign Languages

The Modern Foreign Languages Faculty at St Julian’s fully endorses the school mission statement and welcomes students of all nationalities and levels of ability.

Our aim is to impart knowledge of the French/Spanish languages, thus promoting understanding and respect for other cultures.

Pupils are encouraged to develop their full potential and reach their highest level of achievement.

French is a compulsory subject in KS2 (Y6) and KS3. It is an optional subject in KS4. French and Spanish are offered at IB as part of the Group 2 subjects (language acquisition).

Key Stage 2 (Year6) and Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)

This course is a foundation course which allows the students to foster and develop an interest in the French language and culture, but also gradually develop their skills in: listening, speaking, reading and writing. A thematic approach is used covering different vocabulary topics. A systematic and progressive study of French grammar is also part of the course, and the experience of consciously learning and describing the rules and structure of the French language at age 11+ is intended to stand students in good stead when they wish or are required to acquire additional languages in their future careers.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) IGCSE (Cambridge board)

In Years 10 and 11 the study of French is optional and those who choose to continue the subject are prepared for the French Foreign Language extended level IGCSE examination. The programme at this level involves acquisition and further development of language structures, syntax, grammar and vocabulary. This course is an excellent preparation for the IB courses for those who aspire to take the language through to pre-University level..
