History

We aim to encourage an appreciation of the richness and complexity of the past, and a critical awareness that will help you to understand and question the world around you.

Key Stage 3

In Years 7-9 History forms part of the core curriculum. Students follow a course that is broadly based on the English National Curriculum but adapted to take into account the Portuguese setting of the school and the diverse nature of our student body.

In the first two years a range of Medieval and Early Modern topics are investigated and in Year 9 we undertake a thematic study of some the changes that have shaped the modern world; these include the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, the Military Revolution and First World War.

iGCSE

Students opting to take History in Years 10 and 11 are prepared for the Cambridge International GCSE Modern World course.

The core course on ‘International Relations since 1919’ is followed, as well as a Depth study on Germany 1918-1945, and coursework on the Portuguese Revolution.

A different document examination paper is set each year from one of the topics on the core course.

IB Diploma History

Students taking this subject at Standard Level study the Cold War and the dictatorships of Stalin and Castro, and take a document paper on the Arab-Israeli Conflict. In addition they write a 2,000 word independent investigation on an historical topic of their choice.

Students taking the Higher Level programme follow the same course as for Standard Level but in addition take an extra paper in nineteenth century European history. The topics here include the Unification of Germany and Italy, and Imperial and Soviet Russia.

Career Opportunities

Students wishing to pursue University degree courses in History, Law, Philosophy, Economics, Sociology, Politics, PPE, or Archaeology find that a good History IB qualification will support their application significantly.

Universities and employers see a qualification in History as the marker of an analytical and critical mind capable of understanding multiple chains of cause and effect in detail - a capacity which every subject and professional career requires.
